Mixson, the 44-acre mixed-use development being built by the I’On Group in North Charleston, has been awarded a 2008 Congress for the New Urbanism Charter Award. Mixson was one of 15 submissions selected for the annual award.

The Congress for the New Urbanism, founded in 1993 by a group of architects, is an international nonprofit organization leading the promotion of walkable, pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods as an alternative to sprawl. The Charter Awards each year showcase design, planning and development projects that best exemplify the principles of New Urbanism.

In order to be considered for the award, developers of Mixson had to submit an overview of the project and its goals and how the development exemplifies New Urbanism, as well as examples of creative ways they have dealt with obstacles.

In addition to having a pedestrian-friendly design, Mixson has met other principles of New Urbanism, including the inclusion of a broad range of housing types and pricing, preservation of green space and inclusion of public parks and squares. The neighborhood will eventually include some commercial uses and is within walking distance of North Charleston’s East Montague Avenue business district.

Mixson is the second-largest home project in the nation that is certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standard, known as LEED.
