City Paper Article: John Marshall returns to open Zocalo in North Chuck

A new Mexican street food joint
by Stephanie Barna

We’d heard that a new Mexican restaurant was being planned for North Chuck, and we got excited. Then we heard that John Marshall, the former owner and chef of Al di La, was involved in the project and that really got us pumped. The well-regarded and much loved Marshall sold his West Ashley restaurant to right-hand-man Marc Kohn several years ago and beat it out of town, headed to North Carolina to start a farm and perhaps a new restaurant. We hadn’t heard much from him in the intervening years, but he recently popped back up on our foodie radar.

An all-too-brief e-mail exchange recently garnered some information about his new venture Zocalo. The restaurant is going into an old gas station, which most recently housed Duke’s Garden Center at 1049 E. Montague in the heart of Park Circle. The interior will have a 20-seat bar in addition to 40 seats inside and a huge outdoor patio with seating under a pergola.

The menu will specialize in Mexican street food with regionally authentic tacos. Marshall says they will have a vertical spit for cooking al pastor, and they’ll serve a Sonoran Hot Dog (a dog traditionally wrapped in bacon and piled with toppings like beans, grilled onions, fresh onions, tomatoes, mayo, cream sauce, mustard, and jalapeño salsa) and paper cones of chili-spiced chicharrónes (fried pork rinds).

Marshall and his business partners Robert Holzel and Richard Harris (who will serve as general manager) have tapped Cameron Caruso from Fleet Landing to run the bar. They’ll be focusing on traditional handcrafted cocktails with fresh ingredients, lots of tequila, mezcal, and American whiskey. Expect a complete selection of cold Mexican beer too.

Not sure when we can expect to see Zocalo open, but we’ll keep you posted.

My Photos of The Peace One Day Festival

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

It was a GORGEOUS day at the Riverfront Park on the Old Navy Base, now owned by the Noisette Co. The breeze off the river welcomed you to a tent city of local activist groups, participating schools, arts & crafts events, food vendors and more. My sister and I enjoyed a delicious wrap from Dellz Deli, some rasberry sorbet and fresh baked goods while we sat in the field and listened to live music. The crowd was rich with families, friends and locals all in support of Peace One Day!

COAST TASTINGS: Thursdays 4-7pm & Saturdays 11-2pm

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Don’t miss your opportunity to tour this great brewery and get a taste of their fresh, local, seasonal brews! Jamie and Dave have been super busy since opening their doors to eager friends and neighbors. Constant questions about the brewing process, the history of the building and the flavors we are suppose to taste inundate the creators of COAST Beer as they pour 3 oz tastes of each one of their craft beers. Growlers and bottled beers are also available.

The Blackbeerd Stout was the soft, dark, chocolatey beer of the day on this visit.

Chalkboard menu changes often so, come get it while you can!

Three Bad Jacks w/ The Defilers
When: Thu., Sept. 2
Price: Free
threebadjacks.com

So-Cal psychobilly band Three Bad Jacks make their way across the country this week, hitting Charleston for the first time. Fans of psychobilly know what to expect: fast, rockabilly-inspired mayhem on drums, electric guitar, upright bass — and upright hair. Hell, the lead singer is even named Elvis. The self-declared “bastard sons of rock ’n’ roll,” comprised of bassist Dave Eckles, drummer Kyle Helm, and the aforementioned singer/guitarist Elvis Suissa, arrive in support of their recently released sophomore album, Crazy in the Head, the band’s first full-length since 1999’s Made of Stone. Three Bad Jacks have also found recent success in the television world’ songs have been featured on HBO’s True Blood and the upcoming Chris Kattan movie Wanted: Undead or Alive. While the band’s latest effort displays a higher level of maturity than their rougher-edged previous outing, fans should still expect to see a high-energy set, with local rockabilly favorites the Defilers opening. —Jansen Cumbie
